Housing 21 takes a step in the right direction for their housing group and residents. Using renewable energy and saving their residents money on their bills through the use of renewable energy for heating and power.

As part of Housing 21’s low-carbon commitment, they have just completed an investment of £392,000 at Eric Long Court in Swindon, upgrading the heating and electrical systems, moving from fossil fuel-based heating to a sustainable fuel source that is grown in the UK.

The ageing and inefficient gas boilers have been replaced with a Windhager wood pellet boiler system.

The Windhager BioWIN Kaskade system provides a high level of efficiency with a modulation range from 18 – 189kW, this was installed alongside the Windhager MES Infinity weather-compensating control system for heating and hot water, including Windhager’s remote monitoring system. A bespoke wood pellet store was created using the Windhager 8 probe suction system.

To avoid the use of chemicals in the heating system, the complete system was filled with Reverse Osmosis (RO) demineralised water using the BWT Heating Water protection System to further complement the environmental credentials of the project.

As part of the project, a large solar photovoltaic (PV) system was installed on the roof of Eric Long Court to reduce electricity bills. In future, a high percentage of the electricity used at Eric Long will now be generated on site.
